Senate Commences Move To Convert Kadpoly & Yabatech To Universities
The Senate on Wednesday
commenced moves to convert Kaduna Polytechnic and Yaba College of Technology
(Yabatech) to universities.

Two bills on the
conversion of the institutions scaled through first reading during today’s
plenary.
The bill on the
conversion of Kaduna Polytechnic, tagged City University of Technology Kaduna
Bill, 2016 (SB. 360) was sponsored by Senator Jibrin Barau (APC, Kano) and the
City University of Technology Yaba Bill (SB. 334) was sponsored by
Senator Gbenga Ashafa (APC, Lagos).
Our correspondent
reports that attempts were made to convert the two institutions to universities
in 2010 during President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan era.
To this effect, a 20-man
committee was set up by the then Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu
Rufai in November 2010.
The Kaduna Polytechnic
was established in 1956 as a technical institution for the then Northern
Nigeria and it was upgraded to Polytechnic in 1961.
On its part, the
Yabatech was established in 1947 and the institution is acclaimed to be the
first citadel of higher learning in the country.
