The Kaduna Polytechnic (KADPOLY) in collaboration with Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) has concluded arrangements to renovate 18 blocks of hostels, under a Renovate Operate, Maintain and Transfer (ROMT) arrangement.

The renovation project according to the Polytechnic’s Rector, Professor Idris Bugaje, would gulp about N600 million following approval by the Federal Executive Council.
Professor Bugaje who conducted Journalists round the dilapidated hostels at the Polytechnic’s main campus in Tudun-Wada on Monday, said the 18 blocks of hostels, have the capacity to accommodate 4,000 students.

He said the proposal would entail the private firm to renovate the 18 blocks of hostels, spread across three campuses of the polytechnic, maintain and operate them for 15 years before returning them to the school authority.

According to the Rector, “The proposed project is one of the major intervention from ICRC and the first in the education sector. We are looking to renovate the hostels because they are in a very bad shape and unconducive for learning. We do try to renovate them once in a while internally, but there is a limit to how far we can go considering our limited resources.

“The new operators under the proposal will charge the students slightly higher, but the facilities would be equivalent to a three-star hotel. They would get a nice place, with a kitchen per floor at about N20,000 to N25,000 per annum. We have negotiated this price with the student union and they have agreed with the new rate, because many students rent small rooms outside the campus for as much as N50,000 per annum.

“We have achieved full business scale and certificate has been awarded, the Minister of State for Education received it, now we are waiting for Federal Executive Council to give approval, then it will take off,” the rector said.

Professor Bugaje further stated that the institution is making further arrangements to build more hostels particularly for female students under what he referred to as swap arrangements.

“We have identified seven houses belonging to the institution worth over N500 million. We plan to look for private company to come and build additional hostels especially for female students. We want to make the school girls friendly. We want to value the cost of the buildings and properties and then the swap would be processed,” he added.
